The Brief · every market morning, 08:45 ET

Tuesday 20 October

One ideaThe editorial take, written at 08:45 ET with the pre-market in view

The pre-market confirms both reads from last night: energy is bid — health care and staples are leading alongside it, a defensive tilt unusual for a tape the voice board still describes as broadly bullish on equities. Halliburton beat its quarter and is up before the open, adding fundamental support to the energy outperformance. Chips are the hardest-hit sector; AI infrastructure names are pulling lower without company-specific news and NuScale Power is down sharply with no headline, extending the pressure on the AI-adjacent themes that have struggled for a month. GE and NFLX report today with options near the richest premium of their respective years; GE is quiet pre-market and the print is the test. GM is down sharply despite announcing a large buyback, which is the tape saying capital returns are not enough without earnings behind them.

Rich premiumWhere the put is well paid at Monday’s close

Rich premium today  VALIDATED

What this means: if any of these is a stock you'd own at the right price, today is a well-paid day to sell its put. We check three conditions, each independently validated on ten years of real option quotes — every one, on its own, earned put sellers more per trade than selling on a random day:
high vol — the options are expensive in absolute terms (IV ≥ 30)
top of its year — premium in the top quarter of that name's own trailing year
post-drop — the stock fell 5%+ this week; protection is being bid
More conditions = a better day. Signal is from last night's close and typically persists days, not hours — verify the live quote at the open. The example contract is the shape our validation used: ~40 days out, ~20-delta, held to expiry, assignment acceptable.

This is activity, not a reading on premium: who traded size, in what, leaning which way. Volume = settled options volume against the name’s own normal, with the contracts traded under it. Calls / puts = the split of that volume. Stock move = last session and last five sessions.
