The Brief · every market morning, 08:45 ET

Wednesday 21 October

One ideaWritten at 08:45 ET, before the open

Chips are the headline before the bell — SMCI, DELL, AMKR, and VRT are all bid sharply on Nvidia partnership announcements, pulling the semiconductor complex higher and briefly interrupting the AI infrastructure sector's month-long losing streak. Whether it holds is the question for today: NFLX is extending its post-earnings slide into a second session, and Abbott and AT&T are both down sharply after their own quarters, keeping yesterday's "earnings punish misses" read intact. Healthcare drags; chips and tech lead. With TSLA and IBM reporting tonight, the session opens in a split mood — Nvidia-ecosystem names bid while the post-earnings softness pattern persists in parallel. The deeper fault line from overnight is unchanged: more voices are publicly bearish on long-duration Treasuries than actually hold that position, and the hyperscalers will start answering the capex question next week.

Rich premiumWhere the put is well paid at Tuesday’s close

Rich premium today  VALIDATED

What this means: if any of these is a stock you'd own at the right price, today is a well-paid day to sell its put. We check three conditions, each independently validated on ten years of real option quotes — every one, on its own, earned put sellers more per trade than selling on a random day:
high vol — the options are expensive in absolute terms (IV ≥ 30)
top of its year — premium in the top quarter of that name's own trailing year
post-drop — the stock fell 5%+ this week; protection is being bid
More conditions = a better day. Signal is from last night's close and typically persists days, not hours — verify the live quote at the open. The example contract is the shape our validation used: ~40 days out, ~20-delta, held to expiry, assignment acceptable.

This is activity, not a reading on premium: who traded size, in what, leaning which way. Volume = settled options volume against the name’s own normal, with the contracts traded under it. Calls / puts = the split of that volume. Stock move = last session and last five sessions.
