The Brief · every market morning, 08:45 ET

Monday 2 November

One ideaWritten at 08:45 ET, before the open

The overnight energy read is the one to watch this morning: energy is the only sector gapping down before the bell — pulling back sharply after weeks of being the tape's clear winner — while chips are the surprise bid, with semis leading all sectors. COHR is up sharply pre-market despite no headline, a notable reversal for one of the biggest 20-day losers in the AI-infrastructure selloff; the open would confirm whether that's real repositioning or thin pre-market noise. LITE is down on the Marvell acquisition news — Marvell's CEO framed the combined entity as a path to becoming a top-five AI infrastructure semiconductor company, which the market is reading as a vote on the acquirer. AAPL and GOOGL short pressure from the overnight both hold, with voices continuing to step aside ahead of AAPL's report this week. Broad market is bid, but a rotation from energy into chips is the actual story this morning, not a clean recovery.

Rich premiumWhere the put is well paid at Friday’s close

Rich premium today  VALIDATED

What this means: if any of these is a stock you'd own at the right price, today is a well-paid day to sell its put. We check three conditions, each independently validated on ten years of real option quotes — every one, on its own, earned put sellers more per trade than selling on a random day:
high vol — the options are expensive in absolute terms (IV ≥ 30)
top of its year — premium in the top quarter of that name's own trailing year
post-drop — the stock fell 5%+ this week; protection is being bid
More conditions = a better day. Signal is from last night's close and typically persists days, not hours — verify the live quote at the open. The example contract is the shape our validation used: ~40 days out, ~20-delta, held to expiry, assignment acceptable.

This is activity, not a reading on premium: who traded size, in what, leaning which way. Volume = settled options volume against the name’s own normal, with the contracts traded under it. Calls / puts = the split of that volume. Stock move = last session and last five sessions.
