The Brief — edition, Wednesday, September 23 2026

session 2026-09-23 · 713 liquid names scanned · insight, not advice

One idea OBSERVATION

The single most interesting thing in what investors said publicly this quarter — not a recommendation, and not a prediction.

Thirty-three market voices call long-duration Treasuries a short — and not one of them actually holds the trade.

Among the public bears on long-duration Treasuries, including Andrew Sarna, Bob Doll, Bob Haber, Chris Whalen, Darius Dale, David Freeberg, David Rosenberg, and David Woo, zero disclosed a matching position. The bearish call on duration is one of the most widely voiced views in the corpus, and it is also one where talk and position have completely diverged: 33 talkers, 0 holders.

Counted from the corpus: 33 people are bearish on LONG_DUR_TREASURIES; 0 of them actually hold the position.

Has this worked? OBSERVATION

Every convergence we have ever flagged, priced from the next session’s open and measured against SPY over the same window — 291 of them at 60 sessions.

Average +0.74% vs SPY, but the median was 0.00% — the typical convergence matched the market exactly, and 43% beat it. The average is carried by a small number of large winners, not by being right consistently.

*The three validated put-selling signals — explained in the next section.

Rich premium today VALIDATED

What this means: if any of these is a stock you'd own at the right price, today is a well-paid day to sell its put. We check three conditions, each independently validated on ten years of real option quotes — every one, on its own, earned put sellers more per trade than selling on a random day:
high vol — the options are expensive in absolute terms (IV ≥ 30)
top of its year — premium in the top quarter of that name's own trailing year
post-drop — the stock fell 5%+ this week; protection is being bid
More conditions = a better day. Signal is from last night's close and typically persists days, not hours — verify the live quote at the open. The example contract is the shape our validation used: ~40 days out, ~20-delta, held to expiry, assignment acceptable.

The c8alpha take

Expedia and Fastly made opposite moves on similarly heavy tape — one sharp drop with the most concentrated options positioning flagged today, one sharp rally with elevated volume for a third consecutive session — and neither looks random; what's driving each is worth watching tomorrow for confirmation. The more striking market fact sits in the voices data: dozens of strategists and managers are on record bearish on long-duration Treasuries, and not one holds the position — the widest talk-versus-position gap in the dataset. In the themes panel, nuclear and uranium names have been broadly lower over the past month while grid infrastructure is moving the other way; Solaris Energy raised more than a billion dollars in new senior notes this week specifically for data center power capacity, turning the thesis into a financing event. SNX reports tomorrow with options pricing at the top of its recent history.
