The Brief — edition, Friday, October 23 2026

session 2026-10-23 · 661 liquid names scanned · insight, not advice

One idea OBSERVATION

The single most interesting thing in what investors said publicly this quarter — not a recommendation, and not a prediction.

Long-duration Treasuries split the room, but conviction is lopsided.

58 investors are publicly bullish on long-duration Treasuries and 71 are publicly bearish, but the two sides don't hold equally real positions. Of the bulls, 9 — including David Rosenberg and Jim Bianco — actually hold the trade; of the bears, only 2, Kate Moore and Keith McCullough, do. The larger crowd is the one with fewer people actually positioned.

Counted from the corpus: LONG_DUR_TREASURIES splits the room: 58 bullish (9 positioned) against 71 bearish (2 positioned).

Has this worked? OBSERVATION

Every convergence we have ever flagged, priced from the next session’s open and measured against SPY over the same window — 291 of them at 60 sessions.

Average +0.74% vs SPY, but the median was 0.00% — the typical convergence matched the market exactly, and 43% beat it. The average is carried by a small number of large winners, not by being right consistently.

*The three validated put-selling signals — explained in the next section.

Rich premium today VALIDATED

What this means: if any of these is a stock you'd own at the right price, today is a well-paid day to sell its put. We check three conditions, each independently validated on ten years of real option quotes — every one, on its own, earned put sellers more per trade than selling on a random day:
high vol — the options are expensive in absolute terms (IV ≥ 30)
top of its year — premium in the top quarter of that name's own trailing year
post-drop — the stock fell 5%+ this week; protection is being bid
More conditions = a better day. Signal is from last night's close and typically persists days, not hours — verify the live quote at the open. The example contract is the shape our validation used: ~40 days out, ~20-delta, held to expiry, assignment acceptable.

The c8alpha take

The energy options tape stands out today: RRC, RIG, PAA, and KMI all entered the institutional call-accumulation feed in the same session, each with call-heavy flow at elevated volume — and the broader oil and gas group has barely a seller left in the investor conversation. Meanwhile the AI infrastructure and power grid clusters have produced almost no winners over the past month, with several names down sharply — a quiet but sustained rotation out of the expensive buildout story and into the commodity that powers it. WGS, down hard today with earnings in three days, is showing the most extreme put-heavy options positioning in the data — that kind of protection-buying ahead of a binary event is worth tracking. Tomorrow's confirming signal for the energy read: does the call accumulation persist, or was today a one-session cluster?
