The AI money is piling up in a few companies. Investors are betting it spreads.
All three clouds accelerated: Azure grew 48%, AWS 39% for a sixth straight quarter of acceleration, and Google Cloud more than doubled to over $30B, helped by selling its own AI chips to other companies. The damage was in the businesses AI changes. Alphabet (GOOGL) fell 12.6% as search revenue growth slowed to 12% while queries hit a five-year high: Google shows fewer ads in AI Mode, and Mark Mahaney says those answers simply earn less. Meta's AI works the other way, sharpening targeting in a feed it already owns; Michael Nathanson credits it with keeping ad growth above 20%. Intel (INTC) lost 24.4%: Vivek Arya says corporate IT budgets are moving from PCs to AI, and Stacy Rasgon pointed to the worst PC shipment quarter in more than 20 years.
The second filter was who pays. Microsoft (MSFT) barely moved because it funds AI from its own cash flow; Alphabet burned $9B this quarter, and Meta is seeking up to $95B in new stock. Oracle (ORCL) rose 3.6% simply by promising that spending peaks and free cash flow turns positive in fiscal 2028. The suppliers kept getting paid either way: Vertiv (VRT) jumped 19.6% on 61% revenue growth and a full backlog, and chip-equipment makers KLA (KLAC) and Lam Research (LRCX) gained. One caution: Microsoft quietly stopped reporting paid Copilot seats.
Money went where AI is a customer rather than a cost. Eli Lilly (LLY) rose 11.3% after raising guidance on its obesity drugs, with thirteen investors bullish; healthcare gained 3.1% and industrials 1.7% while tech fell 2.0%. Jason Trennert calls healthcare and industrials AI's implementers, and Steve Eisman likes Lilly as AI exposure "without relying solely on the crowded core AI trade." Most of the crowd, Dana D'Oria and Craig Johnson among them, calls it shelter from concentration, and Apollo's survey data still shows companies seeing little bottom-line gain from AI.
Our read: The AI revenue is real but pooled in the companies selling compute, and the market now prices those by who can pay for it. The rotation is a bet that the benefit spreads before the bill arrives; the tell will be healthcare and industrial earnings that cite AI savings in numbers, not slides.
Names link to what each person has said on the record. Bullish and bearish are stated views; a name with ● also said they hold the position this week. Counts below show both.
Every call this week, with each investor’s thesis and how the stock has moved since →
Extraordinary numbers, contested price
The filing shows first-half revenue of $16.3B, fourteen times a year earlier, and $974M of operating income in the second quarter; no customer is more than 10% of revenue. Most investors who weighed in were bullish: Jason Calacanis and David Sacks argue the loss headlines miss the margins, and Pauline Yang calls $1.8T fair to cheap.
The serious argument is about price, competition and control. Aswath Damodaran values it at $1.48T and would sit out above that; Chamath calls about $1.5T fair. The core business is very profitable, but frontier models have no moat yet, with an open-source Chinese model now near the frontier, so price competition and repeated capital raises could eat the returns. Roger McNamee and Steve Eisman point to $637B of compute commitments, by Tom Tunguz's count, most of them owed whether customers keep paying or not. And public shareholders get the economics without the control: the founders hold 50.1% of the votes and a benefit trust appoints four of the seven directors.
The readout: A buy for those who think demand for frontier models outruns price competition; a wait for anyone who values the business near $1.5T. Large IPOs tend to lag in their first six months, and the filing leaves its third-quarter revenue blank.
Several investors landing on the same stock within ten days — names they said themselves, not a sector we mapped them to. Stated views, not positions. Counts cover the last 14 days. The tag compares that attention with the name’s own history — 11× usual, new, or usual level — and the list is ordered by it, so a company that is always discussed sits below one nobody talked about a month ago.
